Increased frequency of holidays:
Many years ago people would only go on one main holiday a year. The one main holiday they would take would usually be an abroad holiday. Any other holidays that they took throughout the year would usually be domestic holidays for either a short break or visiting family. However, over the last few holidays have become alot more popular and alot easier to book and sort out therefore alot more people are going away on holidays more frequently. Also the Holidays with Pay Act 1938 has been introduced and it encourages the two week holiday. Domestic holidays have also become alot more popular due to people only wanting short breaks away. Today, society has better working conditions so that means that tourist are able to take more holidays away and more short breaks with the family. Another thing that has changed over the years is that now in the home, there are alot more electrical appliances that are able to do the jobs that many years ago, people would have to do by hand. These are things such as washing machines, dryers, microwaves ect. Since all these different technical machinery have come out, families now have more time to spend with each other for leisure therefore they are starting to take holidays more reguarly and have more fun. This has had a good turn out for the travel and tourism industry because they are not loosing out on any money they are gaining it increasingly.
Increase in holiday home ownership
Holiday home ownership in the UK has become increasingly popular since the recession with more and more people taking regular breaks within the UK.
In 2009 the number of holiday homes that are now owner in Britain has increased by 2.6%. It is also expected to be increase another 2% in 2012. In the coming years, it is predicted that there will be an increase of overseas visitors to Britain and with people purchasing holiday home more often they are likely to stay over for a short break away. Its not just families that decide to purchase these holiday homes, but also couples that like to get away for a few days and single people who are looking for a second home that they can go to that offers an affordable price.
Having a holiday home takes away the stress of air fares, transfers, exchange rates and foreign languages. By having a holiday it home it can have negative and positive effect on the travel and tourism industry. The positive effect would be that people are going to travel abroad more often and buy flights from around their area and keep on going over to their holiday home for a break and a holiday. If people from overseas bought a holiday home over in the UK it would be good for us because people are coming over into out country and spending their money. This is the multiplier effect.
The negative effect would be that people would stop using hotels for their accommodation because their accommodation is already their therefore the money would stop increasing as much.
More Independent Travellers.
Today, travelling independently has become increasingly popular. This is because people who like to travel and now alot more confident about travelling overseas alone. Increasingly people have decided not to go with 'package' holidays
anymore and they are now building the holiday that they want. In a recent survey carried out by ITW, nearly half of people they surveyed considered themselves to be independent travellers. (44%). People are deciding to travel independently because on the TV and the Media make traveling overseas independently more attractive. This has a negative effect on the travel agents and the tour operators because fewer people are now booking their holidays through these companies as they are booking them over the internet. This is a negative things because some time people dont book them with ATOL and ABTA which means they would loose out on money if anything went wrong because they wouldnt be covered.
Factors:
Natural Disasters: Iceland Volcano Eruption 2010 In April 2010, the volcano in Iceland , Eyjafjallajökull, erupted creating a huge ash cloud which resulted into most of Europes airlines not being able to fly from the 15th of April to the 20th of April. Domestic flights were suspended indefinitely, but some of the international flights were scheduled to depart on Sunday. The eruption was a much more violent eruption because it interacted with water and ice. This volcano affected tourism because hundreds of people where stranded abroad or in airports because flights were cancelled because of this volcano. This was the affect because people then didnt want to fly overseas to the countries that were effected therefore tourism on their countries lost alot of money.
Terroism: 9/11
When the attacks on September 11 occured it had an immediate negative effect on both inbound and outbound tourism. The
attack has this negative impact because people were afraid of flying just incase something like this was to happen again. Also, people were afraid of bombs and other terrorist attacks and families wanted to stay home so nothing like this happened to them. It has also had a negative effect on tourism because countries are loosing out on money because people arent travelling overseas. Also, since this attack, tourism has not been developing as much because people are afraid of flying just incase something like this occurs again. It is also a positive effect because since this attack, airports have now got fully trained security guards and it has also been made more thorough and it takes longer to through security, however it does mean that people feel safer flying.
Recession:
In a recession, customers are wary about spending their money on leisure activities. This includes travel. They will
take fewer holidays and short breaks each year and they will look for better packages that could save them money. While marketing tourism may seem like an unimportant essential expense in a recession, it is important for travel destinations and suppliers to continue to market their services in order to receive repeat business and attract new visitors and tourists. The negative effect on tourism would be that people are now not spending their money on leisure and holidays because people are now having to spend their money on things they need such as food and drink, bills and keeping a roof over their families house, therefore the money isnt being spent on additional causes. Since recession, the outbound travel and tourism industry have lost out on alot of money because people are just staying local (domestically) for their short breaks and holidays to save their money for the more important things.
Overall, the trends and factors affecting the travel and tourism industry are constantly changing and impacting the industry, however the industry has to react in a good way in order to stay successful and profitable. The industry is constantly changing and mangers of organisations need to keep up with all of the current trends to make sure their businesses stay profitable and continues to meet customer needs and requirements for the latest trends and fashions.
People need to feel safe when they are on holiday and they need to be confident that they will not be affected by terrorism or natural disasters, therefore the travel industry is making it safer to travel and also more aware now of natural disasters and advising their customers of possible risks.
